Genetics and Biotechnology Tutorial Page

This page can provide the students a form of tutorial instruction as well as review when studying a unit in Genetics and Biotechnology. The corresponding activity sheets will provide students a guide for what is important in the animation or movie clip that is to be viewed on their own or as a class.

Hatfield and McCoy Position Paper

This project is engaging for students as they learn about the folklore of the Hatfields and McCoys. They will be presented with the theory that a major contributing factor to the Hatfield vs. McCoy feud was a genetic disease called VHL (Von Hippel-Lindau Disease). Students will write a position paper which either supports or denies these claims.

DNA Tube

This site provides video animations and lectures. Typically, these are appropriate for students at a higher level but could be useful if explained in a simple way to general students.

Family Secrets Problem Based Learning Unit

This is a PBL that involves an interrupted case based lesson in which students study a genetic disease. Students perform a gel electrophoresis in order to determine which members of the family carry the gene for the disease.

Who's The Daddy? A Problem Based Learning Unit on the Structure, Function and Analysis of DNA

This PBL is about a surrogate parenting case in which there is a dispute over who the father of the child is and their is a requirement for DNA testing. Integrated in this PBL are a large scale model of DNA, DNA extraction and simulated gel electrophoresis. Teacher instructions are included.
